As Johannesburg prepares to host the G20 Summit from November 22-23, our vibrant city will welcome thousands of global delegates, tourists, and media professionals. The summit is an exciting time for South Africa’s economic and diplomatic prospects. However, it also places a spotlight on the importance of staying alert and informed. Whether you are a local going about your daily life or a visitor discovering the City of Gold for the first time, it’s important to stay street smart in Jozi.
At the Forum for Integrated Risk Management, we are committed to helping individuals navigate Johannesburg confidently and responsibly. We have compiled a set of practical safety tips based on Joburg Tourism’s recommendations and our own risk management expertise. These are easy to follow and essential for anyone enjoying the city during this historic event.
1. Travel Smart with Reliable Transport
Navigating Johannesburg is easier and safer when you use trusted transport options. However, although these options pose a lesser threat, always ensure that you have informed relatives of your whereabouts and notified them when you have reached your destination safely. Regular check-ins may seem annoying, but they significantly contribute to providing you and your loved ones with peace of mind during your trip.
- When opting for e-hauling services, e.g., Bolt, Uber, etc., always ensure that you confirm your driver’s details and check their boot before getting into their car. You can also share a live pin location with a colleague or a relative as an extra precautionary measure. Stay alert and don’t get distracted on your electronic devices; make sure that you keep track of your journey by adding the route to your mobile GPS to ensure that your driver remains on course and does not deviate from the planned route.
- The Gautrain is a fast and efficient way to travel between Sandton, Rosebank, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport. When travelling by train, try to stick to daytime only.
- Registered shuttle services are ideal for airport transfers and hotel transport. Always book through your accommodation or a reputable company. When visiting from overseas, ensure that you or your company check reviews before making any online bookings.
2. Protect Your Belongings with Common Sense Practices
Petty theft can happen in any major city, and Johannesburg is no exception. Here is how you can stay one step ahead:
- Do not walk in unlit or isolated areas, especially after dark. If you do have to walk, try to do so as a group, even if it is just to cross the road to a coffee shop, restaurant, or shopping centre.
- Keep cellphones, cash, wallets, and passports out of sight. Try and keep your belongings to the minimum. The less exposed you are, the better.
- Use a cross-body bag or a securely zipped backpack and hold it in front of you in crowded areas.
3. Dress for the Climate and Comfort
November will be summertime in Johannesburg, and visitors can look forward to a high-altitude climate with beautiful blue skies and picturesque sunsets. Due to its daytime heat, Jozi is known for its afternoon thundershowers – which can be alarming for those not used to thunder and lightning.
Pack lighter cotton and linen fabrics for a comfortable summit experience during the day, but don’t forget to bring something warm for the venue or in the event of afternoon temperature drops due to the rain.
4. Stay Financially Safe at ATMs and Payment Points
ATMs are known for criminal activities, and you can become a target if you are not alert. To avoid falling victim:
- Never hand over your bank card or share your PIN. If in doubt, go into the bank for help
- Use ATMs located inside shopping centres or airports rather than on the street
- Do not allow anyone to offer unsolicited help or attempt to distract you while transacting
- If you plan to stay longer to see our attractions, lower your banking app’s transaction limits for the duration of your trip
5. Lock Before You Leave & Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Criminals often look for easy targets and tourists often find themselves on the target list
- Always lock valuables in the boot of your vehicle before you start your trip, not once you reach your destination. Always keep your belongings out of sight.
- If parking in public, try to choose well-lit and monitored areas
- Plan your routes and familiarise yourself with crime trends and hot spots in and around the city.
- Stay focused and vigilant, especially at intersections and on darker roads.

While the city bustles with energy, culture and history, you must be situationally aware. Avoid displaying signs of wealth, such as expensive jewellery or high-end electronics. Do your homework before booking any accommodations, travel, or other services. Scammers are all around; they use events such as the G20 Summit to exploit locals and tourists. Always make sure you read reviews online and on social media before you make any bookings. Trust your instincts and avoid any situation that feels unsafe.
Johannesburg is a city of contrast, colour and charm. By being prepared and cautious, you can experience all it has to offer safely. The G20 Summit marks a moment of global attention, but your personal safety remains a daily commitment.
At the F.I.R.M, we advocate for proactive vigilance in both personal and professional environments. Share these tips with your fellow travellers to help create a safe and welcoming Johannesburg for everyone.
