As the out-of-office responses start to land in mailboxes around South Africa, the F.I.R.M. would like to wish you all happy holidays! While we all deserve a relaxing break, please remember that South Africa does experience a notable surge in criminal activity over this period. Follow these tips to make sure that your holidays are happy, and SAFE:
Personal Awareness
Always remain alert to your environment; distractions from electronic devices or lack of peripheral scanning can make you vulnerable, so remember to look around from time to time. If you feel like you’re being followed, stop, turn around, and observe. If someone is following you, their response will confirm their intentions. And remember – confident body language can deter attackers.
Shopping Safety
At malls, park in well-lit areas, keep valuables hidden, and double-check car locks to prevent remote car-jamming.
When shopping online, verify site security with HTTPS and avoid public Wi-Fi for transactions. Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
ATM Safety
Common threats include card swapping, skimming, and ATM-mounted skimming devices. Stay vigilant, cover your PIN, and avoid help from strangers at ATMs.
After Phone Theft
Notify banks immediately to block apps and cards, blacklist the device, and change critical passwords. Remote wiping of the device is recommended, if possible. Reporting the theft to the police aids in tracking stolen items.
Petrol Station Safety
Criminals often exploit familiarity with petrol stations for crimes. Keep doors locked, avoid distractions like phone use, and remain vigilant even after leaving the station.
Laptop Safety
Use secure, inconspicuous bags and cable locks for physical protection. Invest in insurance, back up data, and enable theft recovery software. Encrypt sensitive information and update antivirus programmes when on public Wi-Fi.
Walking, Running, and Cycling Safety
Exercise with company, leave valuables at home, and wear reflective clothing. Carry ID for emergencies and avoid distractions like phones or expensive accessories.
Women’s Safety
Trust your instincts, stay alert even in familiar environments, and avoid walking alone. Have self-defence tools like pepper spray ready and avoid flashing valuables. Secure your car immediately upon entering or leaving.
Event Safety
Research venues, know emergency exits, and adhere to event rules. Keep belongings secure and maintain communication with your group. Trust your instincts and stay prepared for emergencies.
How ever and wherever you choose to celebrate the holidays, vigilance, preparation, and maintaining a low profile are the key to staying safe. Technology like antivirus software, theft recovery systems, and encryption complements these efforts, ensuring your holiday season is a happy one spent with loved ones.
