Vumacam and F.I.R.M. are working together to drive improved security in Johannesburg by addressing gaps in urban safety measures. Leveraging the proliferation of fibre optic networks, Vumacam’s mission is to enhance public and private security through maximising the efficacy of a widespread CCTV camera network linked by robust fibre infrastructure. This initiative aims to provide a seamless security service that bridges the gap between various public and private security services and their customers.
The Vumacam System: An Overview
Thousands of CCTV cameras owned and operated by Vumacam cover public spaces across Gauteng, including municipal roads. These cameras are connected to Vumacam’s sophisticated Proof platform, which consolidates all camera feeds. Additionally, organisations can leverage Proof for their private space cameras, integrating seamlessly with Vumacam’s public network.
By using Proof, Vumacam brings control rooms to life, managing alerts from multiple systems. Vumacam uses automatic dispatch and nearest vehicle first technology to ensure rapid, efficient responses, while the platform connects vetted security partners with the SAPS in real time through the Eyes & Ears (E2) Initiative.
The platform uses advanced machine learning algorithms to detect unusual behaviour and alert operators to potential security incidents. “A significant aspect of Vumacam’s operations is the absence of a traditional control room,” says Kerry Nagel, Head of Marketing for Vumacam. “Instead, as a technology company, we focus on managing our sophisticated monitoring platform, to which public and private sector security services can subscribe.”
Security services go through thorough vetting and training before they can access the platform. The system is designed to preserve privacy as there is no constant human surveillance; only when the Proof platform identifies something unusual – like an altercation between people or someone running in an unusual location – does a human operator review the alert. Kerry says: “This approach minimises privacy concerns and ensures that the focus remains on genuine security threats.”
Collaboration with F.I.R.M.
Vumacam’s collaboration with the Forum of Integrated Risk Mitigation (F.I.R.M.) exemplifies how community-driven initiatives can enhance security. City Improvement Districts (CIDs) are a prime example of communities coming together for the collective good. In these districts, Vumacam’s network covers areas identified as security hotspots. These feeds are integrated into F.I.R.M.’s designated security hubs, such as those in Kya Sands and the Retail Improvement District in the CBD, enhancing the overall security infrastructure.
Measuring Success and Ensuring Privacy
Measuring the success of Vumacam’s efforts involves several metrics, including the number of operators using the system and the volume of customer inquiries from areas looking to join the network. On F.I.R.M.’s side, the number of successful security interventions that resulted from access to Vumacam’s platform can also be measured.
Hundreds of successful apprehensions across Gauteng have occurred, targeting suspects involved in various crimes such as armed robbery, car-jacking, home invasions, fraud, and car thefts. Particularly notable successes include the apprehension of longstanding criminal syndicates. “We have been managing our commitment to privacy in line with the stringent European GDPR standards since well before the introduction of POPIA. Our processes and training ensure that privacy is a priority for us and our partners, ” Kerry says.
Often, inquiries for access to Vumacam come from residents’ associations (RAs), who partner with vetted and approved control rooms. These control rooms, in turn, are staffed by personnel trained in compliance with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Vumacam is also diligent about ensuring that requested footage is shared only with authorised entities like SAPS, security companies, or insurance firms and only when a relevant case number is provided. This careful management of data reinforces the company’s commitment to privacy while maintaining robust security measures.
Technological Strengths and Limitations
“Vumacam’s strength lies in its License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, as most crimes involve vehicles,” Kerry explains. “The system can locate vehicle registrations, and using historical footage, is able to identify the usual travel routes of a vehicle. This allows for the strategic placement of an interception team along these frequently travelled paths.
Continued expansion of the camera network, ongoing staff training, and technological innovation are expected to further enhance apprehension rates and contribute to overall crime reduction efforts.
The Road Ahead
As Vumacam continues to expand its network, the goal remains to create safer communities through innovative technology and strategic partnerships, such as the one it has with F.I.R.M. The company’s approach balances the need for security with the imperative to protect individual privacy. By fostering collaborations with community organisations and leveraging advanced machine learning, Vumacam is setting a new standard for urban security.
Vumacam is not about surveillance; it’s about smart surveillance. By integrating cutting-edge technology with community-driven initiatives, Vumacam is paving the way for a safer, more connected urban environment. We believe Vumacam can help South Africa become a safer place through the power of video and technology to secure communities and businesses and unlock the power of collaboration between public and private sectors in the fight against crime.
